Beginner's Welding question?

1 answer Reward0 Remaining Time 0 Day

Just started Welding, and am trying to understand the technique to get good welds. In class we practiced stringer beads in flat position, no joints. I'm wondering if you start at the top of piece of metal and drag it towards you, or do you start from the left and drag it right? Or does it not matter?

Please let me know, thanks.

Are you talking about SMAW a.k.a. "stick" welding? It makes no difference at all the direction of travel when you're welding flat. You can weld any direction you need to. Whatever is convenient. When welders talk about "dragging", you want to drag the electrode because that causes the arc to blow the slag backwards, away from the leading edge of the puddle. "Pushing" the arc blows some of the slag forwards and that can cause it to get trapped under the puddle. Not a good thing, obviously. With stick welding the first thing you need is to set you current right for the size of your electrode. the next thing is to learn to travel at a constant speed. You can figure that out by watching the puddle. you want to go slowly and you want the puddle to be a nice oval shape. If the puddle gets too elongated or goes out of shape. your current is either to low, or you're going too fast.
