    It's not. Gold itself is alloyed because it is about as soft as Lead. Gold alloys are still just a little harder than copper, which is softer then Iron. The hardest metal alloy known is a mixture of osmium and iridium. It is used on metal surfaces which get a lot of wear and abrasion. One common use is to plate the bearings in ball point pens.
