Any metal or semi-metal that is alloyed with carbon for the most part is called a carbide. Tungsten carbide is one of the most common carbides, so you are right, they usually just call tungsten carbide plain old "Carbide" a few carbides-- tungsten carbide titanium carbide iron carbide silicon carbide calcium carbide

It depends what you mean by strongest. The hardness of tungsten carbide is high, it is used as a cutting tool but it can be quite brittle. Diamond is harder. It is not really used for tensile applications.
