Testing a welds strength?

Im peparing myself to do some welding on my vehicles suspension, and ive been practicing for a while to get strong welds. I took a welding course at the local college so i have some basic knowledge. Anyways,
i welded a pipe to a flat piece of 1/4" thick or so sheetmetal, and i stood on the sheetmetal, and pushed the pipe to try and see if the weld would keep it from breaking off, should the pipe be able to break off? or should it hold strong enough where i cant break it off? Right now im only using a wire feed welder, no gas or anything. Would using gas make any difference (me being outside welding) ? Thanks alot, Also what can i do to ensure my welds are strong enough?

It depends on what diameter pipe you use. For the sake of discussion lets say the pipe is 1" OD. The pipe should bend before the weld breaks if the pipe is long enough say greater than 12". As you learned in welding class the gas helps to control the spread of heat from the weld reducing the heat effected area of the materials being welded. If you are welding mild steel, especially pieces 1/4" thick or greater, gas to does not help much. However if you are welding thinner pieces less than 1/8", or working with certain types of alloys, inert gas is the way to go.
