In the railroad industry welding is done on rolling stock by Carmen.
The track is welded using the thermite process.
Welds are inspected by Non Destructive Inspection. The NDT's are trained in using X ray, eddy current, ultra sound, dye penetrent, and mag particle (magna flux) inspections. Critical welds are x rayed. Other are either dye penatrent (if non ferrous) or magna fluxed ( if ferrous)
You also have the aerospace industry, heavy equipment manufacturing and repair. Pipeliners, boilermakers. etc
auto body etc.
I do tig welding in the USMC on aircraft components.
