Arc Welding Query...?

I've recently acquired a 140amp Arc Welder and I need to weld a footplate onto my motorbike, I need to know if it would be safe with my petrol tank still attached, as it has around 2 gallons of fuel left inside , if I earth the unit close to where I am welding?

I really don't want to remove the tank as a lot of electrics are still attached....

Use your nose and smell around for gasoline leaks and vapors. usually you can smell gasoline before it reaches a concentration high enough for ignition. Clean all areas near the weld zone with engine cleaner. Get one of your friends or family to stand by with a fire extinguisher while you're welding. Make sure they wear safety glasses and turn away from the arc.
