How do you weld things?

1 answer Reward0 Remaining Time 0 Day

A co-worker asked me to help him weld. The metal was steel, painted black. When I put the hood down; wham! I could see absolutely NOTHING! The flame looked like a white dot through the Lens. But even with the white light, I could STILL not see the metal. Not one bit. How do you weld, if you see nothing?
Update: The flame was a mix of oxygen and I THINK; acetylene?

You had the wrong filter. It was too strong, too dark, for the type of welding you were doing. Flame? Sounds like oxy-acetalene (sp?), yes? If it was a gas torch instead of an electric arc welder, then you were using the much darker filter for an arc welder. The filter for a gas torch is more like really dark sunglasses. The gas flame is brighter than the sun, but essentially the same type of light, so the same type of filter is used. The much brighter electric arc also gives off huge amounts of ultraviolet light which will give you a sunburn. UV light from the sun is what gives you a sunburn in real life. The electric arc will do the same as the sun, which is why an arc welder covers his entire exposed area of his skin with leather, and uses a full face shield and gauntlet type gloves. You do NOT need such protection from a gas flame torch since the flame is simply bright and hot without any UV.
