Help on Arc/Stick Welding?

I now have a contruction class that i can weld in. My welds are alright, said by senior members but I wanted to be sure and ask for some help on here. The bead on the weld is submerged inside of the metal, and is also a large bead, thicker than 2 pens stuck together side by side. Some of my welds are kind of hilly and stick out of the metal, a fair bit. I know that this is the stupidest question, but how do i keep the rod from sticking to the metal, when I need to to touch the metal usually to start the arc? Sorry if these are stupid questions but I'm new to welding, and any tips would be appreciated.
