Welding is a trade that is not controlled by apprenticeship in most jurisdictions. Welders move up in the trade by accumulating AWS "Certifications". You can get a basic first "Cert" with about 500 hours of classroom+practice or less — call it six months of community college.
Welding is mostly about practice, and more practice. How far you go in Welding depends on your technical skill, and how flexible you are about job locations. Weldors (note the spelling) can make a lot of money in the Arctic, for example.
