With welding, you wear a helmet that protects the eyes and allows very little smoke in the helmet. As long as you wear the right protective gear, you should be ok. My BIL is also a welder and he is never sick and has wonderful eyes and his lungs are fine.
I used to work in a large city where welding was quite popular...the only welding incidents we got was when pipes fell on them or a piece of machine broke and injured them. I don't recall any vision or lung problems from the welding. I am sure that there are some but like I stated previously, as long as you are properly attired, you should be ok.
Every job comes with risk. Even though I, as a resp therapist, do not deal with heavy machinery I am still at risk of contracting aids, TB, viruses, etc..... I say if you love it then do it.
