hh, My forte' I have been engaged in this occupation since 1984.....You are in good hands- MIG, or Metal Inert Gas welding has been around for some time, But it really became popular in the 1980's. Small diameter wire is fed by a set of rollers which conduct low voltage, high amperage DC, through a lead, or 'whip' to a hand held gun which also has some form of inert gas supplied to it. The gas is called a shield, because without it, the material would oxidize upon cooling down and would not leave a sound metal ( it would be brittle, weak and ugly.) This process is quick, easy to learn and does not distort thin materials in the same way arc or gas welding would.. You have seen this process on any one of a number of TV shows like Mythbusters. It is perfect for MFG'ing because it's quick, and clean, and easy to master- You heard it here first! cYA-KJH2
